Voice of the country from over
100 years
3 April 1897. In Susa's valley a new
newspaper is published, his name is “Il Rocciamelone”, to make an offer to
the very dear mountain to Susa valley's hinabitants. The founder is the
bishop monsignor Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz (proclaimated blessed from pope
Giovanni PaoloII the 14 July of the year 1991, in occasion of the visit to
Susa) that on the first number greets the first pubblication with those
words: “I bless the catholic newspaper “Il Rocciamelone” and all his
editional staff's members, giving the brave to go on with the holy idea”.
And now some extracts from the first articol: “Next to spirituals and
religious interests, we are going to support thanks to God civil interests
of Susa's valley people (...) Our columns are at the disposition of local
correspondents; at purpose of political situation, of most important things,
news are going to be promulgated in large part; civil chronicle,
neighbourhood's news , and judicial survey, are going to be considered very
important; people thanks to the newspaper are going to new and better
understand statistics, industrial and agriculture progresses; We won't
neglect beautiful examples of litherature and cultural things that recreate
soul; We won't neglect anything, to offer a useful newspaper, funny to
everyone and everywhere. More of 100 years of life for a newspaper are
really very much. A holy project but also very binding. Powers are always
been unequal in connection to the project, shareholders had always few money
in the poket; layers were very strickt but it has been a greate adventure
that connects local church history to his country and further. At the
beginning, so, it was “Il Rocciamelone”, like the mountain that dominates
the valley and on his summit (at 3538 meters) the blessed Rosaz wanted to
place in 1899 a Virgin Mary bronze statue. They were the newspaper
“founders fathers'” years: the holy bishop monsignor Rosaz; the joung layer
Cesare Napoli, the first almost improvised director Giuseppe Calabrese, that
will be in the future bishop of Aosta, thrue “soul” of the newspaper, but
always in second row. The bishop house became editing and printing shop. In
that period 500 copies were printed and information market was dominated
from the “Indipendente”. Anticlericalism blinded also intelligences and the
“clericali” (as they were called) had to toil a lot to find “a place in the
sun”. But those fathers fibre was very strong. In 1907, after two years of
pubblications suspension, “Il Rocciamelone” changed name and became “La
Valsusa”. We are in the greate journalist Luigi Chiesa's years. “La Valsusa
fight without fear political catholic “battle”. Thanks to Luigi Chiesa the
extraordinary figure of a joung teacher that will arrive in the parliament
of Rome: Federico Marconcini made himself conspicuous. Those are also the
years in which Giacomo Alberione started the future “ Holy Paolo daughters”
here in Susa. It's the 1919, after the greate war years the bishop
monsignor Marozio started his work to recreate the diocesan weekly paper. To
do that, he contacted Don Alberione who sent to Susa 14 girls who attended
all the newspaper works: editing, corrections, proofs, printing and they did
also newspaper sellers job. The jounger of them went along Susa's streets to
annonce that the new newspaper was at the disposition of readers. It almost
seems a story, but those are pages of history. Overrunning the annals we
can't forget an extraordinary director figure monsignor Carlo Marra, who
passerd all his life in the newspaper (in 1912 he was only 12 when he went
to the printing office to stick labels), going throug the Fascism, the war,
the liberation, the postwar period, the economical boom, the council. A
direction of 40 years, till the 3 January of the year 1975, when Don Aldo
Amprimo, brilliant student became director. His “sale e pepe” and his
“schegge” belong to the most pugnacious ( and better written) years of the
newspaper. With him, we have to remember two others extraordinary “pens”:
the canonical Domenico Sardi and the canonical Guido Ferrero, inventor of
the newspaper's sport page. Other change in 1979, when Don Ettore De Faveri
became the new director. In few years corrispondents number increases, as
the news, pages and subscribers. “When I became this newspaper director I
didn't think to guide this project till the new century- says Don Ettore–
This thought fascinates me but gives me also trills on my back. Today the
deed is harder than before. I ask me always in the coscience exam that a
director does at the end of a long work day: What do you want us to do, God?
Is there still room for us? Is David's sling still enough in this artificial
information world? I don't claim that God answers me, but I hope that He
gives me a bit of light, be cause I go on thinking that the good newspaper
secret is always that of telling the news”. In a world, as Piero Ottone
writes: Nobody decides to work as journalist to improve the world, but a
good newspaper does that”. This is what we, in little try to do.
